Les Sources de Vougeot

Les Sources de Vougeot are preparing to open their doors in a former Cistercian residence in Burgundy, midway between Beaune and Dijon.

Alice and Jérôme Tourbier’s “Collection des Hôtels du Vignoble” continues to unfurl at the heart of France’s loveliest wine-producing terroirs by opting for a setting on the Route des Grands Crus de Bourgogne. A region with unique winemaking heritage, Burgundy patiently carved out its identity over the centuries, becoming a flagship destination for oenotourism thanks to its history, terroir, wines and gastronomy. Les Sources de Vougeot has thus found its place among the Côte de Nuits, with renovation of the Château de Gilly.

A little history

A listed Historic Monument, this former priory built in the 6th century, also the residence of the Abbots of Cîteaux, will enchant devotees of history and architecture with its moats, church, ribbed vaults, classic French gardens, but also its old mill on the banks of La Vouge. To further enhance the château’s majesty while respecting its heritage and by-gone charm, Alice and Jérôme Tourbier have called upon a duo of architects, Chevalier & Guillemot, specialists in listed monuments and already entrusted with Les Sources de Cheverny; and the Atelier Saint-Lazare studio of architecture.

Living in a castle

Just like Les Sources de Caudalie and Les Sources de Cheverny, Les Sources de Vougeot will perpetuate the spirit of a warm, authentic family residence proposing 5-star service. The château will offer about 50 rooms and suites with inspiring, delicate and velvety decor. Natural materials, harmonious colours, noble fabrics, as well as furniture and objects found in antique markets will create a unique, refined atmosphere. “True to our principle of not wasting anything, this new setting will also feature furnishings and wall coverings that we have preserved,” says Alice Tourbier.

The spirit behind Les Sources

As for dining, Les Sources de Vougeot will propose a gastronomic restaurant and a charming inn. With experience at both Les Sources de Caudalie and Les Sources de Cheverny, Chef Julien Martin will here celebrate the authenticity and generosity of Burgundy’s terroir. And to round off this experience, future guests will discover a Spa by Caudalie nestling in an amazing, vaulted room. Here, therapists will dispense rituals with exclusive treatments based on grape seed extracts, for total immersion surrounded by vines.

The history of the château

  • 6th century. The priory of Gilly was founded by the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés.
  • 12th century. Constant conflicts led the priory into the hands of the monks of Cîteaux.
  • 14th century. The priory was transformed into a château during the Hundred Years War.
  • 16th century. Ruined, pillaged and set on fire during the wars, the château was finally dismantled and torn to the ground.
  • 17th century. A mansion intended for the enjoyment of the abbots of Cîteaux was built on the vestiges of the fortress.
  • 18th century. After the French Revolution, the château was declared a national property in 1790.
  • 20th century. Several owners succeeded one another before the château became Le Théâtre de Bourgogne, then a hotel at the end of the 1980’s.
