Château Smith Haut Lafitte: committed to biodiversity

Since its acquisition by Florence and Daniel Cathiard in 1990, the vineyard estate of Le Château Smith Haut Lafitte has given priority to cultivation respecting the soil.

At Le Château Smith Haut Lafitte, organic cultivation has always been at the core of concerns. Not due to fashion, but by conviction. To preserve its vineyard, the Château has multiplied new green initiatives since its creation (compost production, creation of hedges and  hives to develop biodiversity, work on the soil using horses).

With "Agriculture Biologique" certification, Le Château Smith Haut Lafitte is a pioneer in the field of biodynamics whose principles are now applied to the entire estate. Pursuing its quest for Bio-Precision, the Château also practises phytotherapy by cultivating plants with precious properties all year round: cow horn manure to dynamise the living soil, valerian to fight frost, yarrow and wicker to accelerate the flowering stage, dandelions to fight  fungus, but also horsetail herbs, nettles, comfrey, camomile, ferns, tansy and wormwood! The Château Smith Haut Lafitte has thus built a real pharmacy to prevent disease in its vines naturally, while strengthening their natural defenses.

The Cathiard family is also keen to develop a circular economy by reducing its losses, recycling its organic matter and producing the energy used in the pursuit of its activities. Efforts that are illustrated by the installation of a stealth winery enabling them to achieve energy neutrality thanks to frugal consumption and solar production. The CO2 released during fermentation is also transformed into sodium bicarbonate… An innovation in the world of great wines applauded at COP21.
