Joint interview: Alice Tourbier & Delphine Sauvaget

The co-founder of the collection of Les Sources hotels and her interior architect tell us about the new decor at Les Sources de Caudalie.

What was the goal for renovation of Les Sources de Caudalie?

ALICE TOURBIER: My husband and I founded Les Sources de Caudalie 23 years ago. Even though the hotel has been perfectly maintained over the years with regular refreshment of the paintwork and  new furnishings, it was time for us to write a new chapter in its history by endowing it with a more chic and elegant ambiance.

DELPHINE SAUVAGET: When I met Alice and Jérôme, I immediately understood that they were in search of a unique lifestyle at Les Sources de Caudalie. While respecting the hotel's classic DNA designed by architect Yves Collet, I have added more contemporary touches to express their desires.

How did you begin working together?

A.T: I discovered Delphine's work in Paris. When I contacted her, she was immediately enthusiastic about the idea of renovating our "Palace des Vignes". Together, we then roamed around antique shops and home decor fairs for many months. I really like her personality, and her esthetic choices are very finely-tuned.

D.S: I immediately got on very well with Alice. Our initial discussions turned out to be decisive. I immediately endorsed her approach, her perception of hotelry and what she wanted to do at Les Sources de Caudalie. I was very well supported throughout the project and lucky enough to work with very accomplished partners, such as La Galerie Française, Bruder and L’Atelier Hiromi.

Tell us about the reception lobby.

A.T: Our intention was to elevate the entrance hall both literally and figuratively. Our magnificent chandelier has found its new spot in this room which has now doubled in height. We also redesigned the reception area and desk for the convenience of both guests and the teams, and installed a real revolving door.

D.S: The idea was to preserve the building's original shell. To emphasize the existing woodwork, the walls have been repainted in a dark tone, very enveloping, to give a box-like effect. You rediscover this same colour, a shade lighter, accompanied by a floral pattern, in the restaurant La Grand’Vigne.

What about rooms in the historic buildings?

A.T: The rooms at La Bastide des Grands Crus and Le Comptoir des Indes have been renovated throughout with, among other things, made-to-measure bathrooms and walk-in closets giving priority to noble materials such as marble and solid wood. We also added an artistic dimension to the rooms by introducing real works of art.

D.S: In fact, in each room you discover carefully selected paintings, linked to Les Sources de Caudalie. Designed as showcases highlighting these artworks thanks to natural materials and either warm or mineral tones, these rooms hold a dialogue with surrounding nature. With them, I wanted to create elegant and comfortable spaces ideal for meeting up and recharging one's batteries, while giving them an extra dose of soulfulness thanks to ceramics, sculptures and secondhand objects.
